We received this as a Christmas gift several years ago. It's a very nice looking set of speakers that looks stylish yet is also compact. We were impressed by the sound quality, though we aren't audiophiles - to me, it sounds like there's a lot of bass added to give a warmer sound to music tracks.
I do, however, question the reliability of this machine. Once after I disconnected my iPod from this speaker, it gave my iPod some kind of boot error that I had to manually fix through searching online (it wasn't the typical resetting that fixed it, it was something else that I no longer remember). There was no real harm done and my iPod was fine after that.
One of my friends, however, was not so lucky. Soon after he disconnected his iPod, it would fail to boot properly. Unlike my iPod, though, nothing we did could fix it. He ended up having to bring it to the Apple store to get it replaced.
That incident made me more hesitant to use the machine - and it's pretty ridiculous something that costs this much can potentially ruin the product it was created for - so knock a star off for that.
In addition, a few years after owning the machine, I no longer even had an iPod (my old mini finally broke down) and had no desire to buy a new one (I like my Samsung mp3 player much better 8D). I thought, no biggie, I'll use these nice speakers as backup computer speakers. To my surprise, the Bose SoundDock has NO AUX IN line! (this is the port you use to connect your external speakers to your computer's speaker jack, or to connect any mp3 player to the speaker, not just iPods). So our expensive gift is pretty much a paperweight now.
I found the lack of an AUX IN port completely inexcusable for a product that is this expensive (about $250). An AUX IN line is pretty much standard on any other kind of speaker - the cheap iPod speakers I have right next to me (and that I'm using as computer speakers) that we got for free has it!!
Bose seemed to realize how absurdly cheap they were and corrected this with their SoundDock Series II line (Bose® SoundDock® Series II digital music system for iPod® - Silver). But they shouldn't have HAD to correct this in the first place - it should have been standard from the start! So knock one star off for that, as well.
Since using this product, I have since switched to just using whatever speakers are available, as I am not an audiophile and just need good speakers that work and aren't tied to iPods (have an AUX IN line!). So, for me, the Bose SoundDock speakers are overpriced for what you pay for - no AUX IN line and worse, potentially fatal to your iPod. I get the sense Bose just charges these prices to rip off people who don't know better and assume that since it's more expensive it must be better. They make nice speakers, but they are still overpriced for what they are. If you insist on buying Bose then buy from their Series II line instead, or just buy a different brand that isn't so overpriced.

before purchasing system i contacted seller for return policy and the response was that item was in MINT condition. The systems dock piece is very loose i must jiggle to get the sound to come thru. seller forgot to disclose this piece of information.
