Quality Problems July 29, 2010 Book Lover (Houston, TX United States) Bought this to charge our phones and play music at our vacation house. It only gets used on the weekends, but has been extremely disappointing.
- The charging dock broke after only a few months and would no longer charge the phones. The manufacturer's warranty was very short (30 or 90 days, I don't remember which) and the cost to ship it and repair it was almost as much as we paid for it. We were disappointed that Sony did not stand behind its product.
So, we decided not to mail it back to Sony. Ended up taking it apart and re-soldering the loose wires, so it is working for now, if you wiggle the phone just right.
- Probably related to the above, it will sometimes not play sound from the iphone. But sometimes it works ok.
- The sound is fairly good, but this isn't a cheap device, so we expected decent sound.
- Programming the FM presets is tedious. As near as I can tell, there is not a 'scan to presets' that will remember all the stations with a fairly strong signal.
- Have not been able to test the XD radio as there are no XD signals available in this area.
Good FM, but poor AM July 25, 2010 mikec This unit is a good value for the money. However, the reception requires additional support. Using an auxiliary RadioShack HD antenna, the FM channels come in very well. Unfortunately, even with an auxiliary AM antenna, the AM reception is weak, at best. Regardless, I'd buy this unit again.
Good radio, until it stopped working. Then the "fun" began July 21, 2010 Dave Spitze I bought this radio for my wife for Christmas 2008. She has an iPod (so do I and one of our sons) and wanted the HD capacity to listen in the kitchen. The radio got good reception, even on non-HD stations. We were happy with it.
Fast forward circa 16 months to April 2010. The radio signal started dropping out (I read the other reviews and another reviewer had the same type of issue). Then it completely dropped out; if you try to tune in a station, the LED just blinks. The iPod dock works, so it's not a speaker issue. I'm not an electronics expert, but it almost surely has to be a defective chip.
Then the fun began. I called the Amazon vendor (J&R) and they said I needed to talk to Sony, and connected me to Sony "customer service" (an oxymoron if there ever was one). Because the radio was out of warranty (the warranty lasts one year), the repair price was around $110 and the replacement price was $120. I told them I didn't pay $140 for a radio only to have to pay $110 to have it fixed 16 months later--especially given that it is undoubtedly a defective chip, and there was nothing we did to make the chip go bad--it was defective from day one.
I then asked for an address to send a complaint to about the policy. The first customer rep said I could find an address on the Sony web site, but would not give one to me. This phone call took about 20 minutes.
So I went to the web site, but I could not find any sort of address for customer relations (actually, I couldn't find virtually any addresses on the Sony website). So I called up the customer service department again and asked again for an address to send a letter to; again, no sale. I asked why the first customer rep lied to me and told me I could find the address on the web. This one lasted about 30 minutes.
In the meantime, I sent an e-mail to J&R and over the weekend they said to give them a call. I did so and the J&R customer rep was great. He called Sony and stayed on the line to listen in. I asked again for an address to send a letter complaining about their policy, and was again turned down. At this point the J&R rep stepped in and asked the same question, and I don't think he could believe the answer either. I then asked if I wanted to send the radio for a repair, could the rep provide me an address. Sure--and she rattled off the address. The rep kept saying she was sorry she couldn't provide an address; I told her to quit the sorry stuff, because she wasn't sorry, it was company policy. This was another 30 minute phone call.
During the course of this phone call or the second, the rep offered 50% off the price, so instead of being $120 to have it fixed it would only be around $60.
After being on vacation and stewing it over (and my wife wants her radio fixed) I finally called today to get a workorder and an address to send the radio to. It took them 31 minutes to get me a work order number and provide an address--the same address the rep had previously given me when she refused to provide an address to send a complaint.
So after two hours on the phone, I get to pay almost half the price again of a radio I bought 18 months ago to get it fixed.
After this incident, and having a cousin who has problems with a Sony TV, I would be very hesitant to buy another Sony product again.
So if you buy this radio, and it stops working after the warranty, expect to be unhappy.
Dave
Sony Radio July 20, 2010 WetHam I LOVE IT! For the price, I don't think you can beat it. We use it as an alarm clock, and to me, there is no better way to wake in the morning.
Excellent product! July 11, 2010 Mike Miller Beautiful sound quality and great HD reception, especially considering the small size of the unit and low cost. Much better than the short-lived TEAC HD that it replaced. Highly recommend. Exceeded our expectations. Controls are logical. Only complaint, lack of good internal battery to store your presets when unit is unplugged, but this is a minor issue compared to the quality of the sound.
