Amazon.com Product Description -- Posted May 22, 2008 Amazon.com Product Description -- Posted May 22, 2008 Never scramble to write down a new song title or the name of an artist you hear on the radio. A simple button press places the song information on your iPod. The JBL On Time 400IHD loudspeaker dock is a complete digital life system. It features the digital clarity of HD AM and FM, multicasting capability, an iPod dock and a clock with a dual alarm. A complete digital life system, featuring the digital clarity of HD AM and FM, multicasting capability, an iPod dock and a clock with a dual alarm. | Combines many proprietary technologies for the highest quality sound, offering astonishing bass and clear sound from any direction. | Compatible with docking versions of the iPod, including the iPod touch, iPod nano 3G, and iPod classic 6G. | | Which Dock Is for You? JBL's been in the iPod dock business for awhile, so it's no surprise that the company has crafted enough models to keep up with an ever-increasing army of iPod owners. Which one is right for you? Well, that depends what kind of pod person you are: For the Power Hungry For those who seek more volume, the On Stage 400ID should be your first stop. At 2x15 Watts, it's the loudest and largest of the bunch, and features an Atlas woofer for added bass. But size isn't everything--the On Stage Micro boasts the same wattage rating without the woofer. For the Weekend Warriors Those who need a dock that they can take anywhere should investigate docks that can be powered by batteries. The On Stage Micro runs on four AAAs, whereas the On Stage IIIP and On Stage III run on six. Take your music to the beach, on camping trips--wherever you can't bear to be without it. For the iPhone Techies The iPhone owner--if you can stand to put the thing down--has a couple choices. The On Stage IIIP provides a smaller and more portable option, or the On Stage 200ID gives a bit more power. These two docks support all docking iPod models as well. For the Featurephiles or Heavy Sleepers Some of us just aren't content with basic functionality; we need more buttons, more lights. Others just need a little nudge to wake up in the morning. If this is you, then the On Time 200ID and 400IHD are for you. Both feature an alarm clock and AM/FM radio, with the ability to wake up to your favorite song stored on your iPod (and then reject it with the snooze button). Of course, for the masochists, a classic buzzer is also available. The On Time 400IHD adds a dual alarm clock and HD radio to the mix, for a crystal-clear signal and a variety of text-based information (artist name, song title, weather alerts, school closings, etc.) scrolled across your screen. Something for Everyone All of these models feature a remote control for full iPod navigation, Evercharge topology to charge iPod even when not connected to a PC or the system is turned off, a mini-jack for auxiliary devices, and the sleek design and solid performance you'd expect from JBL. | HD Radio Technology The JBL On Time 400IHD loudspeaker dock features FM multicasting--the ability to broadcast multiple program streams over a single FM frequency (e.g., 97.7-1, 97.7-2). With its static-free, crystal clear reception, FM can sound as sensational as CDs, and AM sounds as rich as analog FM stereo. A variety of data, including text-based information (artist name, song title, weather alerts, school closings, etc.), is scrolled across your display. Digital broadcasts are at the same frequencies as analog broadcasts so that listeners do not need to learn new station numbers, and today's stations remain at their current place on the dial. You get local content and the excellence of HD Radio with no subscription fees. One-Button "Wish List" Even if your iPod is not docked, the JBL On Time 400IHD system will store song information; the next time the iPod is docked, download the stored wish list to your iPod. Then, the next time you connect your iPod to iTunes, it will display your wish list and allow you to easily select the songs. iPod Docking and Charging In addition to your wish list storage, enjoy the convenience of controlling your music and browsing videos using the remote. The system also charges your dockable iPod. Dual Alarm Clock The dual independent alarms are great for that school or work schedule. Wake up to your choice of any song on your iPod, an HD or analog radio station, your auxiliary input, or the good old buzzer. The adjustable snooze timer and adjustable sleep timer are additional features. The clock can be supported by 3 AAA backup batteries, so that even with the power out, the alarm functions operate. Compatibility The JBL On Time 400IHD system is compatible with most docking versions of the iPod. A stereo mini jack connection also allows you to enjoy high-quality audio from a variety of other devices, such as MP3 and CD players, desktop computers (all platforms), satellite radio, and laptops. Easy-to-Use Music and Navigation Controls Just a touch of the music controls increases or decreases the volume. Using the navigation controls, browse songs, playlists and photos, change tracks and settings, place a song on your wish list, and more. The JBL On Time 400IHD system gives you complete control of your iPod, as if it were in your hand. Digital Power and DSP The JBL On Time 400IHD system features a powerfully tuned digital audio path. The clean and compact digital amplification, coupled with DSP (digital signal processing) equalization, efficiently presents the transducers with a clean, powerful soundstage. Advanced Technology The JBL On Time 400IHD loudspeaker dock combines many proprietary technologies to provide the highest quality sound. The system offers astonishing bass and clear sound from any direction. - Phoenix transducers--Two Phoenix drivers reproduce accurate high frequencies, clear midrange sound and powerful bass.
- Slipstream port design--The JBL On Time 400IHD port minimizes distortion, while optimizing high-output bass.

Great Sound, Annoying Buttons June 30, 2010 Stephen J. Dewald (Fort Wayne, IN) I tested several iPod docking stations before purchasing this one. I wanted a docking station that worked with my iTouch and that had an AM/FM radio. I had an older JBL docking station that did not have a radio and had always liked the sound on the docking station. I did try a Sony docking station that was available at the local Best Buy, it sounded decent in the store but when I got it home it sounded terrible, so I returned it. I couldn't find this docking station locally so I decided to take a gamble and purchase it online, boy am I glad I did. This had the great sound that I was accustomed to hearing on my old JBL docking station plus it had the added benefit of having a radio. The radio reception is better than average and it has plenty of presets so that I can store all of my favorite stations. The only gripe that I have (and this is a complaint mentioned in several of the reviews on Amazon) is that the buttons on the unit don't always respond to being pushed. I don't mean that it is a once in a rare ocassion type of thing but it is about 1/3 of the time. It comes with a remote but you have to have the remote pointed just right for the unit to respond to the remote. Other than the annoying buttons this is a great unit especially for the price.
Good sound, poor user interface for customization. February 12, 2010 Amzon rvwr (Georgia, USA) I bought this alarm clock last summer and it is a wonderful little stereo. It has great sound and I would recommend it for that. However, I have not tried the alarm with my ipod just the radio. I am glad I did not as I would not want to be jolted like the other users in the review. My biggest gripe is the lack of customization also. I wish and hope JBL pays attention. I almost brought this back when I realized I could not turn the backlight down so it doesn't have the blue light shining all night. The end user should be allowed more conrtrol over the sound of the alarm and the brightness of the clock. Those issues are the only problems I have with the product, that resulted in me almost returning it. I sure hope JBL pays attention as this product deserves 5 stars if these issues are resolved.
Bathroom radio February 7, 2010 Patrick Brown (Milpitas, CA) 1 out of 1 found this review helpful
I bought this as a Christmas gift for my girlfriend to use in the bathroom while she gets ready for work in the morning. Her old radio was a very old Sony analog radio that got poor reception. I wanted to get a small HD radio that would not take up a lot of space. This little radio puts out a surprising amount of sound for it's size. It's not "high fidelity" by any means... but for what it is, it sounds great. The HD radio feature is the number one reason I bought it, and it works wonderfully. Crystal clear with absolutely no static. We love the dual alarm feature as well, which is great since we both wake up at different times. The only drawback to this radio is that the buttons don't always respond when you push them. The indigo blue lights on this radio are always on, even if the radio is off... and they are bright. It has an automatic dimming feature when ambient light is low, but it doesn't dim much. If this is used on a nightstand, be prepared to have a fairly bright night light whether you like it or not. It resides in the bathroom of our master bedroom, so it's not exactly close to our bed, but even still, it's bright enough to annoy me, as I like to have the room pitch dark at night. I generally throw a towel over it before we go to bed.
We don't use the ipod feature or the remote, but it's nice to have in case we do.
All in all, if you're looking for a great sounding HD radio that takes up a small footprint, this JBL 4001HD is for you.
JBL February 6, 2010 Kenneth L. Baldwin This product was very easy for my wife to setup and use and provides great sound for such a compact product.
Commment January 11, 2010 Clementecl (Santiago, Chile) Easy to use, not amazing sound quality. It remembered my first stereo.... Remote control absolutely useless. I suggest to buy Bose
